STANDARD SIX: EXTERNAL DEVELOPMENT LEADERSHIP
School executives will ensure that the school has processes and systems in place for budgeting, staffing, problem
solving, communicating expectations and scheduling that result in organizing the work routines in the building. The school
executive must be responsible for the monitoring of the school budget and the inclusion of all teachers in the budget decisions so
as to meet the 21st century needs of every classroom. Effectively and efficiently managing the complexity of everyday life is
critical for staff to be able to focus its energy on improvement.

During the Spring Semester we realized that we needed to create additional opportunities to increase safe networking environments for our parents. An increase in parental involvement is one of our school improvement goals. I created the design plan for our Parent Academy. I learned through this process that when we create opportunities that are beneficial and meaningful for our kids, not only will parents show up, but they will also support our school as well as support the building of relationships with our faculty and staff.

I was encouraged to attend most board meetings for Edgecombe County Public Schools. During these board meetings, updates on local, district, state and federal legislations were often presented. The district would also establish how we would be impacted and affected as a district and how we would operate under those protocols. The role I played was to share information with my administrative team and staff so that we would all be on the same page with the same information from the same source. I learned that there are many moving pieces to make a LEA function effectively. Board meetings are where the systemic functioning of it all take place.
